Langtree, which means tall tree, is mentioned in the Domesday book, listed with several other North Devon manors, including Clovelly, Littleham and Bideford, all of which were held by Brictric (Beorhtric), Earl of Gloucester, and later by Queen Matilda. Stapleton was originaly called Galhille. An ancient Charter of about 1290 mentions land sold by Robert de Bulkaworth to Walter de Stapleton. In 1314 Stapleton is mentioned in a scroll concerning the raising of money by Edward II for an army to invade Scotland. |
